Protecting Children

World Children’s day: Rome 2019

Good Shepherd International Foundation

The lush tea estates of Sri Lanka, and their tea pluckers are beautiful imagery, particularly on glossy tin boxes selling their finest teas.

Behind this facade lives one of the most marginalised and underserved communities in South Asia. And they have lived this way for generations.

The children in these estates are particularly vulnerable.

Protecting Children, an initiative that creates child-friendly safe spaces in a number of vulnerable communities around Sri Lanka is putting the onus for protecting children more rmly in the hands of the community itself. With the right mechanisms, facilities, training and mentorship, the GSIF Sisters are empowering parents, social workers and women in particular to create a safer environ- ment for themselves and their children. What’s more, they are creating a more conducive environ- ment for learning, and for children to be mentored to more fully realise their potential.

The film went on to be played at an event on Child Protection in Rome in 2019. It made the fact clear that GSIF was making a huge difference in the lives of the children there, that the strategies they put in place are working, scalable and sustainable.
